Famous for its railway museum the  town of Shildon is steeped in local history., We are ideally situated 2 minutes walk from local shops and restaurants but also 2 minutes from local countryside walks., The old black boy coal branchline is a 5 minute walk away from the cottage. One of the earliest branchlines in the world. Take a walk down the old branchline through the rolling countryside past the entrance to the Bishop Auckland to Shildon railway tunnel., In years gone by the railway line ran through the town, aswell as beneath it. Today the the lines still run underground near the old black boy line through the Shildon tunnel to the market town of Bishop Auckland. Here you can visit the beautiful Auckland Castle, the Spanish gallery and the world Famous Kyren.  By car Bishop is a 3 mile drive., The beautiful market town of Barnard castle is a half hour drive away. With lots of old curisoty shops and antique shops including the one owned by the famous David Harper., Visit the Bowes Museum famous for its silver swan or the stunning Raby Castle., Durham city is a must and only a half hour drive away. Visit the stunning Durham Cathedral, take a ride on the riverside boat or even hire a canoe.  There is a beautiful walk along the riverside and lots of restaurants and bars to relax in afterwards., Further afield Beamish museum is a great place to visit and sample the life of days gone by., Weardale is only a 30 minute drive. Visit the beautiful town of Stanhope or take a drive over the beautiful moors.
